Wire Relay 45 - Preparing for Installation

Section 1 - Overview

When installing wire relay for NewsRoom 45, planning is the key to an easy installation, and confusion free maintenance.

Wire relay is a news aggregation, and distribution system which allows groups of news producers to share a news feed. Content is collected (aggregated) from all of the contributing sites, to a distribution center, or hub.  This aggregated content constitutes the news feed which will be distributed to all of the member sites.

Once again the wire relay consists of two processes, aggregation and distribution .

When planning the system, a centralized hub site must be chosen.  On smaller networks this may be a NewsRoom 45 system already in operation.  On larger networks, a separate Hub site may be set up to specifically handle the relay distribution. The larger the system, the greater server requirements for the hub, and the greater network bandwidth required.

Aggregation

The process of aggregation is performed at all sites, contributing content to the news hub site, but not the news hub site itself.  The KLZ Micro Relay program is installed on these sites, and is responsible for replicating local content to the hub site. Specifically, news stories, and their audio attachments will be replicated.  A local wire queue is created and configured at the site, and is designated as the "Send To" relay queue.  Users will post content to this queue, which they wish to have sent to the relay hub site for distribution.

Distribution

The process of distribution is performed by two programs, the KLZ wire relay server, and the KLZ wire relay client. The relay server is installed on the hub site, and is responsible for sending text stories to the news sites listed in the distribution list. The relay client is installed at sites receiving the news feed. It is responsible for receiving text items sent from the relay server (hub site) and posting these items to the local system.  The relay client also downloads remote audio attachments, and reconciles audio referenced within news stories.  On the relay hub site a wire queue is set up to store all the items sent in from news gathering sites.  This wire queue is designated as the "Feed" queue.  A queue with the same name should be created at sites receiving the feed.

To review we have three programs to install.

  1. "Klz Micro Relay" service for content aggregation.
  2. "KLZ wire relay server" for content distribution.
  3. "KLZ wire relay client" for content distribution.

Planning the installation

Before installation of the relay system begins, the installer should gather important information about the different sites involved in the relay system.

  • Station Call Letters
  • City
  • Engineering Contact Info
  • External Ip Numbers
  • External Ports
  • Forwarded Ports
  • Server Name
  • Admin user name and password
  • Computer User name and Password
  • NewsRoom User account and password
  • NewsRoom Admin Password
  • Remote Desktop user name and password

Category Codes

Category codes need to be determined for all the stations in the distribution system.  If content is expected to be relayed and filtered properly across the system, these codes need to be determined in advance.

Section 2 - Deployment

NOTE:   It is assumed that a NewsRoom 45 server installation has already been configured on the hub site.

Ins tallation of the HUB site

  • Update the NewsRoom 45 server, and license as necessary.
  • Update the category codes for the wire store.
  • Create the feed queue for the distribution (ie myNN).
  • Create audio playlists which will store contributed audio.
  • Install the wire relay server msi package.
  • Install the relay server reg file

Installation on Client Sites

  • Update the NewsRoom 45 server, and license as necessary.
  • Install the Klz Micro Relay client.
  • Install the Klz Wire Relay Client.
