XML Capture - Market Wire

KLZ XMLtoWire takes a news feed that is 'fetched' over the Internet as a number of separate XML documents, and posts them to the NewsRoom wire service.

The configuration is divided into two parts, the first part being how we get the XML files to the computer.

First extract the archive to a machine that is always logged in (a capture dedicated PC would be a reasonable choice).

Startup XMLtoWire.exe, make yourself a shortcut to this program on the capture machine's desktop, then double click it. Click the options button, and you will see the following dialog:

Since we are using FTP to capture items from CCNMatthews' server, type in the following information:
  • Host: ftp.ccnmatthews.com
  • Username: nr4
  • Password: ******

  1. Fill in the replication interval (10 minutes is reasonable for CCNMatthews items). That field is labelled 'Replicate every'.

  2. The field labelled 'Truncate Larger than' is the largest item size in bytes that the program will attempt to post to the wire store service. The wire store itself will truncate large items, the absolute limit is 200 Kilobytes. This truncates them sooner, resulting in better performance for the indexing and searching of the wire items (besides most people won't read a 200 Kilobyte item, that's 30 printed pages!!).

  3. XML FTP Path is set to '/' for FTP downloads (the default).

  4. Wire store address and port. The IP address of the NewsRoom server, along with the standard wire store port of 5505.

  5. Connection/Data timeout: this interval is how long the software waits before concluding it cannot connect to or post to the wire store, unless you're on a slow link (WAN to the NewsRoom server), 5 seconds is more than enough, 3 is perhaps better for most networks.

  6. XSL Filename. Browse to the CCNMatthews.xsl document.

  7. Default Category code - this is the category code used when an item does not contain a valid category code (e.g. CCNMatthews only releases 'business' type items with no category code).

  8. Default Priority code - what code should the software supply, when no priority is specified in the source documents.

  9. Service name - Enter CCNMatthews.

  10. See "Adding a wire queue" to setup a wire queue for the new service to file to.
